Benzyl Alcohol in Skincare: Preservative, Fragrance Allergen or Both?

Benzyl Alcohol in Skincare: Preservative, Fragrance Allergen or Both?

Benzyl alcohol is a preservative and solvent used in small amounts to keep skincare fresh. It also occurs naturally in some essential oils, such as jasmine and ylang-ylang, and it is on the EU's list of fragrance allergens. That is why a product can say "fragrance-free" and still list benzyl alcohol. Most people use it without any issue, but people with fragrance-sensitive skin often prefer to avoid it.

Key takeaways

  • Benzyl alcohol is mainly used as a preservative and solvent, not for scent.
  • It is not a drying alcohol like ethanol or alcohol denat.
  • The EU permits it as a preservative at up to 1% and lists it as a fragrance allergen that must be declared above set levels.
  • A "fragrance-free" label means no fragrance was added for scent. It does not guarantee no benzyl alcohol.
  • Phenethyl alcohol is a close relative with a rose-like scent, used for similar reasons.

What is benzyl alcohol?

Benzyl alcohol is a clear liquid with a faint, mild scent. It occurs naturally in plants, including jasmine, ylang-ylang and some fruits, and the version used in cosmetics is usually made in a lab for consistent purity.

It is technically an alcohol, but it belongs to the preservative family rather than the drying family. It is used in small amounts and does not evaporate off the skin the way ethanol or alcohol denat does. For a guide to all four alcohol families, read alcohol in skincare.

Why is benzyl alcohol used in skincare?

  • Preservation. It helps protect water-based products from bacteria and is often paired with other preservatives to cover yeast and mould. In the EU it is permitted as a preservative at up to 1%.
  • Dissolving ingredients. It helps some ingredients dissolve and blend evenly.
  • Scent. In perfumes and scented products it can be part of the fragrance itself.

It is often used alongside or instead of phenoxyethanol, another common preservative alcohol.

Is benzyl alcohol bad for sensitive skin?

For most people, no. It is used in small amounts and is widely found in skincare, makeup and haircare.

The reason it gets attention is that benzyl alcohol is one of the fragrance allergens the EU requires brands to name on the label above set levels. A small number of people are sensitive to it, and people who already react to fragrance are more likely to notice it.

Myth

Benzyl alcohol dries out your skin like other alcohols.

Fact

Benzyl alcohol is a preservative used in small amounts. The concern for sensitive skin is fragrance sensitivity, not dryness.

If a product with benzyl alcohol causes redness, itching or a rash, stop using it. If the reaction is severe or does not settle, see your GP, pharmacist or a dermatologist. They can arrange patch testing to pin down the cause.

Why does a "fragrance-free" product contain benzyl alcohol?

"Fragrance-free" usually means the brand has not added a fragrance or perfume to make the product smell a certain way. Benzyl alcohol can still be included for a different job, such as preservation.

There is no single legal definition of "fragrance-free" for cosmetics in Australia, so brands use the term in slightly different ways. If you are fragrance-sensitive, the label alone is not enough. Check the full ingredient list for benzyl alcohol and other fragrance allergens.

Caution

"Unscented" is not the same as "fragrance-free". An unscented product may contain a masking fragrance to cover the natural smell of its ingredients.

Is phenethyl alcohol safe in skincare?

Phenethyl alcohol (also called phenylethyl alcohol) is a close relative of benzyl alcohol. It has a soft, rose-like scent and occurs naturally in rose oil and other flowers. In skincare it is used in small amounts to support preservation and, in scented products, as part of the fragrance.

It is generally well tolerated. As with benzyl alcohol, people with fragrance-sensitive skin may prefer to avoid it.

How to spot preservative alcohols on a label

Name on the label Main job For sensitive skin
Benzyl alcohol Preservative, solvent, fragrance component Patch test if fragrance-sensitive
Phenethyl alcohol Preservative support, fragrance component Patch test if fragrance-sensitive
Phenoxyethanol Preservative Well tolerated by most; patch test if very reactive
Caprylyl glycol, 1,2-hexanediol Hydration and helping keep formulas fresh Generally well tolerated

Green flag

If you are fragrance-sensitive, look for products labelled both fragrance free and essential oil free, then confirm there is no benzyl alcohol, linalool or limonene on the ingredient list.

FAQs

Is benzyl alcohol a fragrance?

It can be. Benzyl alcohol occurs naturally in some essential oils and is listed as a fragrance allergen in the EU. In most skincare, though, it is added as a preservative or solvent rather than for scent.

Is benzyl alcohol natural?

It occurs naturally in plants such as jasmine and ylang-ylang. The benzyl alcohol used in cosmetics is usually made in a lab for consistent purity.

Is benzyl alcohol drying?

No. It is used in small amounts as a preservative and does not have the drying, fast-evaporating effect of ethanol or alcohol denat.

Is phenethyl alcohol safe?

Phenethyl alcohol is generally well tolerated in the small amounts used in skincare. People with fragrance-sensitive skin may prefer to avoid it, as it is a scent component found in rose oil.

Do biobod products contain benzyl alcohol?

No. Our Cleansing Powder, Hydra-Soothe Serum, Nutrient Oil and Probiotic Balm are formulated without benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol or phenoxyethanol, and are fragrance free and essential oil free.
