What Not to Mix With Centella Asiatica (and What Pairs Well)

You have found a centella serum your skin likes. Now you want to know whether it will play nicely with everything else on your bathroom shelf.

Can you use it with hyaluronic acid? Retinol? Vitamin C? Your exfoliating toner? And is there anything you should never put on top of it?

The good news is that centella asiatica is one of the easiest ingredients to pair. It has no well-known ingredient conflicts. When problems do happen, they usually come from what centella is layered with, or from introducing too many strong products at once.

This guide covers what to be careful with, what pairs beautifully and how to layer centella alongside other ingredients.

There is no common skincare ingredient you strictly cannot mix with centella asiatica. It pairs well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, oils and pre and postbiotics. Take more care when combining it with strong actives such as retinoids, exfoliating acids and high-strength vitamin C on sensitive skin, and avoid formulas with fragrance or essential oils that can work against centella's soothing role.

Key takeaways

  • Centella has no well-known ingredient conflicts.
  • Hyaluronic acid is one of centella's best partners. Together they support hydration and comfort.
  • Centella can be used alongside retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C, but introduce strong actives slowly.
  • The bigger risk is stacking several strong actives in one routine, not centella itself.
  • Fragrance and essential oils can undermine a soothing routine on sensitive skin.
  • Layer from thinnest to thickest and finish with an oil or balm.

What should you not mix with centella asiatica?

There is no common skincare ingredient that you strictly cannot mix with centella. It is gentle and is not known to react with other common actives.

What you do need to watch is everything around it. These are the things most likely to leave sensitive skin uncomfortable, which works against the reason you are using centella in the first place:

  • Several strong actives at once. Layering a retinoid, an exfoliating acid and high-strength vitamin C in the same routine can overwhelm sensitive skin, even with centella in the mix.
  • Fragrance and essential oils. A fragranced product layered over a soothing serum can leave reactive skin feeling warm or tight.
  • Physical scrubs and harsh cleansers. Over-cleansing and scrubbing can leave skin feeling stripped. Read our guide to gentle exfoliation for sensitive skin.
  • Drying alcohol-heavy toners. High levels of drying alcohols near the top of an ingredient list can leave skin feeling tight.

Myth: Centella cancels out your other actives.

Fact: Centella does not stop other ingredients from working. It simply helps keep skin feeling calm and comfortable while you use them.

Centella pairing chart

Here is how centella pairs with the ingredients people ask about most:

Ingredient Use with centella? How to pair it
Hyaluronic acid Yes, a great pair Apply to damp skin, then seal with an oil
Niacinamide Yes Introduce one at a time and keep niacinamide strength moderate
Retinol and other retinoids Yes, with care Use centella on retinoid nights and in the morning
AHAs and BHAs Yes, with care Lean on centella on non-exfoliating days
Vitamin C Yes Vitamin C in the morning, centella morning and night
Peptides Yes Layer by texture, thinnest first
Face oils and balms Yes, a great pair Apply after centella to help keep hydration in
Prebiotics and postbiotics Yes Often formulated together for a balanced skin environment
Fragrance and essential oils Proceed carefully Choose fragrance-free products if your skin is reactive

Can I pair centella with hyaluronic acid?

Yes. Centella and hyaluronic acid are one of the best pairings for sensitive, dehydrated-feeling skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It draws water into the skin's surface. Centella helps skin feel calm and comfortable. Used together, they support hydration and comfort at the same time.

To get the most from them:

  1. apply to slightly damp skin, so the humectant has water to draw on
  2. follow with a face oil or balm to help keep hydration in

Our Replenishing Hydra-Soothe Serum combines both in one step: a highly purified centella extract with sodium hyaluronate, sodium PCA and glycerin. Learn more in hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid.

Can I pair centella with niacinamide?

Yes. Centella and niacinamide are a common pairing and many products contain both. If your skin is reactive, introduce them one at a time and choose a moderate niacinamide strength. We compare them in detail in centella vs niacinamide.

Can I use centella with retinol?

Yes. Centella is a popular companion to retinol and other retinoids because it helps skin feel more comfortable while you use them. Retinoids can leave skin feeling dry or tight, especially at first.

  • Use centella in the morning and on the nights you use your retinoid.
  • Apply your retinoid as directed, then follow with a hydrating centella serum and an oil or balm.
  • Introduce the retinoid slowly, a few nights a week to start.
  • If you use a prescription product, follow your prescriber's directions.

Can I use centella with AHAs and BHAs?

Yes, with care. Exfoliating acids such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid can leave sensitive skin feeling warm or tight. Centella does not interfere with them, so the main thing is timing:

  • exfoliate no more often than your skin is comfortable with
  • on exfoliating nights, keep the rest of the routine simple and follow with a hydrating serum and oil
  • on other nights, lean on centella and hydration
  • avoid using acids on the same night as a retinoid if your skin is sensitive

Can I use centella with vitamin C?

Yes. Many people use vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant support, followed by a hydrating centella serum. If your vitamin C is a high-strength ascorbic acid formula and your skin is reactive, start with a few mornings a week and build up. Gentler vitamin C derivatives may feel more comfortable.

Which two serums cannot be used together?

Very few serums are truly incompatible. The combinations to be most careful with are those that put several strong, resurfacing actives on the skin at once, particularly on sensitive skin:

  • A retinoid and an exfoliating acid in the same routine
  • Two exfoliating acid serums layered together
  • High-strength vitamin C and an exfoliating acid in the same routine
  • Two products with the same active, such as two niacinamide serums, which doubles the dose without you realising

The simple fix is to split strong actives between morning and night, or across different days. Soothing, hydrating serums such as centella and hyaluronic acid layer comfortably with almost anything.

Green flag

One strong active per routine, supported by a soothing, hydrating serum and an oil or balm.

Proceed carefully

Several strong actives in one routine, or adding more than one new product in the same week.

How to layer centella with other products

Layer from thinnest to thickest. Watery serums go first, richer textures follow, and an oil or balm goes last. Here are two simple routines:

Step Morning Evening
1 Gentle cleanse or water rinse Gentle, non-stripping cleanser
2 Vitamin C (optional) Retinoid or exfoliant (optional, not both)
3 Centella and hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin Centella and hyaluronic acid serum
4 Face oil or moisturiser Face oil, then balm on very dry areas
5 Sunscreen None
Before you start: Patch test new products and introduce one at a time. If your skin stays uncomfortable or you notice anything unusual, please see your GP or a dermatologist.
